If any experts on learning are interested in responding to this call:
http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503581
please email me, george@astro.caltech.edu.
I am considering an exploratory proposal on the uses of immersive VR as an educational platform. We have a good use case, teaching astronomy and computational science, at a range of levels, from popular lectures to grad school, and we have some experience in using SL for this. However, the proposal would have to have an expert component in the arena of learning studies.
So, if you are interested in dashing off a quick proposal, please do get in touch. Thanks!

thanks for the reply. It is now of course way too late for that particular NSF call, but I'll keep my eye on the future possibilities, and will let you know if something comes up. Thanks,
George
